What is a subluxation?

A subluxation refers to a spinal or peripheral joint that is not moving in its normal motion pattern or is out of place.  Subluxations create an imbalance in the spine, which irritates nerves and blood vessels, and affects the way our body and brain communicate with one another. This can contribute to pain and dysfunction in muscles and organs.

Subluxations can manifest as decreased range of motion, tingling, numbness, muscle spasm, and “knots” in the muscles. They may also cause pain elsewhere in the body; for example, headaches, stomach pain, digestive complaints, breathing difficulty, menstrual cramps, sinus/allergy trouble, etc

The following are some common causes of subluxations:

  • accidents and injuries,
  • improper lifting techniques
  • inherited spinal weaknesses,
  • poor posture
  • poor sleeping habits
  • obesity
  • lack of adequate rest or sleep

People with subluxations can experience symptoms such as — tingling and numbness, muscle spasms, a decreased range motion, headaches, stomach pain and digestive issues, sinus problems, etc.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?
